Scripture: 2 Corinthians 9:7

Reflection: When Grace UMC began in May of 2023, a handful of people made a decision. They could have walked away, decided it was too painful. But they believed God still had something for this church to do.And because of their faith, sacrifice, and commitment, we’re here today. But here’s something I’ve been thinking about lately. The faithfulness that brought us this far isn’t the only faithfulness we’ll need to carry us forward. We’ve spent the last few weeks talking about leaving a legacy of faith and becoming the church God is calling us to be. But eventually, we have to ask ourselves what we’re willing to do to make that future possible.

And yes, part of that conversation involves money. I know giving isn’t always easy. We all have bills, responsibilities, and unexpected expenses. Some can give more than others, and that’s the reality of life. Paul reminds us that generosity isn’t supposed to come from guilt, pressure, or obligation. It’s because we trust God and believe in what God is doing. That’s why I believe tithing is an important spiritual goal. Giving ten percent forces us to be intentional about our priorities. It teaches discipline, trust, and gratitude. And if ten percent isn’t possible right now, that doesn’t mean we can’t begin somewhere. Maybe the next step is one percent. Maybe it’s increasing what we already give. Maybe it’s just making giving a regular commitment instead of waiting to see what’s left over. Friends, stewardship isn’t just about paying the electric bill or keeping the doors open. It’s about what happens because those doors are open. It’s about families receiving groceries, neighbors finding help when they need it, children learning about Jesus, and people discovering a church where they’re welcomed and loved. I don’t want Grace UMC to become a church that spends all its time worrying about whether we can afford to survive. I want us asking who else we can reach, what other needs we can meet, and where God is calling us next. But that kind of future takes commitment from all of us, through our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness. The people who came before us gave so we could have a church today. Now it’s our turn to give so someone else will have a church tomorrow.

Consider This:

  • Does my giving reflect the importance I place on my faith and the mission of the church?
  • What’s one intentional step I can take toward greater generosity?

Prayer: Gracious God, thank you for the people whose faith and sacrifice made Grace possible. Help us remember that everything we have is a gift from you. Give us the wisdom to use our resources responsibly, the courage to trust you with our future, and the willingness to support the work you’ve placed before us. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen
